Caring For A Urethane Finish

Your new furniture is more than just decor; it’s an investment in comfort and style that adds luxurious character to your living space. If you’re fortunate enough to own pieces with urethane finishes, you’ve not only chosen aesthetics but also durability and protection. In this blog you will learn the proper after care for a urethane finish on your wooden tables and furniture. Here at Valhalla Custom Creations we are using one of the best Italian water based finishes on the market, Renner 1k and 2k urethanes. Urethane finishes, such as Renner urethanes, are the hardest finishes currently on the market and offer a robust shield against wear and tear, ensuring your furniture remains beautiful for years to come.

However, owning furniture with a urethane finish comes with the responsibility of proper care. Neglecting this aspect can result in premature wear, scratches, and a dull appearance. That’s why we’ve created this comprehensive guide on caring for urethane-finished furniture. In the following sections, we’ll delve into the intricacies of maintaining, protecting, and even restoring your cherished pieces. Whether you’re a new furniture owner or a seasoned collector, these tips will help you preserve the splendor of your urethane-finished furniture for generations. Let’s get started on the journey to keeping your furniture looking as vibrant as the day you first brought it home.

Urethane finishes are the unsung heroes of furniture care, providing a variety of different sheens but also a robust protective layer. Unlike some other finishes, urethane finishes are designed to withstand the rigors of daily life. They’re commonly available in two primary forms: polyurethane and acrylic urethane.

Polyurethane, known for its exceptional durability, forms a hard, clear coat on the surface of the wood. This finish acts as a shield against moisture, stains, and physical damage. Polyurethane comes in various forms, including oil-based and water-based options, each with its advantages. While oil-based polyurethane offers exceptional durability and depth of color, water-based versions dry faster and emit fewer fumes during application.

Acrylic urethane, on the other hand, is prized for its flexibility and resistance to yellowing over time. It’s often used on lighter wood tones to maintain their natural appearance. This finish offers good protection against moisture and is relatively easy to apply. The urethane we use here is an acrylic urethane called Renner, mentioned above, it is one of the best finishes on the market both for clear coats on raw wood furniture and also tinted with color for cabinets, bookcases or other desired painted furniture.

The beauty of urethane finishes lies not only in their protective qualities but also in their versatility. They can be applied to a wide range of furniture styles and wood types, making them a popular choice for both modern and classic pieces. Understanding the type of urethane finish on your furniture is the first step in proper care. In the sections to follow, we’ll explore the best practices for maintaining and preserving the beauty of these finishes, ensuring your furniture remains a testament to both style and endurance.

Caring for your furniture with urethane finishes is an art of preservation. These finishes, whether polyurethane or acrylic urethane, provide a protective shield against the trials of everyday life, but they’re not entirely invincible. To keep your furniture looking impeccable, regular cleaning is essential. Start with gentle dusting and wiping using a soft, lint-free cloth, we recommend a microfiber cloth, keeping abrasive materials at bay. For spills or stains, opt for mild, wood-specific cleaners, steering clear of harsh chemicals, dawn dish soap actually works really well for this. But what about those inevitable scratches or blemishes? Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. In this section, we’ll delve into specific techniques to address common issues like spills, ink stains, and minor scratches, ensuring that your cherished furniture remains a testament to both style and resilience.

Preventing damage is often more manageable and cost-effective than repairing it. To safeguard your urethane-finished furniture and maintain its exquisite appearance, consider implementing a few preventative measures. Start by using coasters and placemats under cups, glasses, and hot dishes to shield your furniture from moisture and heat. Direct sunlight can be another nemesis, causing fading and discoloration over time. Combat this by strategically positioning your furniture away from direct sun exposure or using curtains and blinds. Additionally, invest in furniture pads or felt protectors for the legs to prevent scratches when moving or repositioning pieces. These small steps can go a long way in preserving the pristine beauty of your cherished furniture. Renner water based urethane is really good at protecting against uv exposure. A good cleaning and preventative waxing is always the safest option. A lot of furniture wax is hard to use and hard to buff off. Even though the finish is hard enough to be a stand alone coating we do recommend a light layer of pledge or ceramic coating every few months. Kind of like your car clear coats, when waxed on a routine it is much harder to get a scratch or smudge than the clear coat itself. It can also help restore some of that lost luster or micro scratches in the surface of the clear coat.

Urethane-finished furniture can be sensitive to environmental changes, and adapting your care routine to the seasons is a wise strategy. As the weather shifts, so should your attention to your beloved pieces. When winter approaches, be mindful of indoor heating, which can reduce indoor humidity and potentially harm your furniture. We’ll delve into this topic more thoroughly in a future blog.

Even with the utmost care, urethane finishes may experience wear and tear over the years. When the time comes, knowing how and when to refinish or restore your furniture is crucial. Refinishing allows you to strip away the old finish and apply a fresh coat, revitalizing your piece’s appearance. It’s a task that requires careful consideration, as overzealous refinishing can damage the wood underneath. When it comes to furniture made by a company or if you own a piece of heirloom furniture from Valhalla then we always recommend reaching out to the builder (us) to have them fix the mistake no matter if it’s their mistake or yours, and sometimes just the clear coat prematurely failing. The builder may re coat it for free or for a smaller first time fee. At Valhalla we use expensive sprayers and clear coats to get the best results possible so sometimes it’s best to let the pros do what the pros do best.

While the care of urethane-finished furniture can be straightforward, it’s equally important to be aware of common mistakes that can inadvertently harm these precious pieces. One of the primary missteps is using abrasive cleaning materials that can scratch the finish or harsh chemicals that can strip away its protective layer. Using harsh chemicals like not properly diluted bleach for example can be very harmful to the finish. Sliding or dragging ceramic dishes is another thing that can easily damage the best of clear coats. Most of the time it’s harmless but sometimes there are burrs or nibs on the bottom side of a ceramic dish that can leave a pretty nasty scratch or micro scratches that compile over time. Another big mistake is using something abrasive like a magic eraser to get off a stain, we’ve seen it and have had to fix it, ask your custom wood worker for advice on this manner. Awareness of these mistakes is your first line of defense in preserving the beauty and integrity of your cherished urethane-finished pieces.
